Western Wyoming Community College

Near Rock Springs, Wyoming

Western Wyoming Community College sits in Rock Springs, serving one of the most geographically isolated student populations in the country. It was the fifth of Wyoming's seven community colleges, and forty students enrolled for credit courses in that first semester. The college was established in nineteen fifty-nine, at a moment when the energy industry was beginning to transform the region and local leaders recognized that a workforce trained in technical and vocational fields would be essential.

The school grew steadily through the nineteen sixties, with major construction in the late nineteen sixties and more growth in the decades after. As the region energy industries grew, the college added programs in mining technology, energy production, and industrial safety to match what employers needed. Today Western Wyoming serves several thousand students each year across campuses in Rock Springs and Green River, offering two-year degrees, transfer programs, and workforce training in fields that keep the Wyoming basin economy running. In a region where the nearest large university is a long drive away, it serves as the educational anchor for the entire Sweetwater County corridor. The main campus covers four hundred thirty-five acres at more than six thousand five hundred feet, and the Green River center is about twelve miles west. The district grew in nineteen sixty-four to cover all of Sweetwater County, and the Mustangs wrestling team won national titles in twenty twenty-three and twenty twenty-four.
