Beaver Mills: Where the Confederacy's Uniforms Became Paper

Alabama

South of Citronelle in Mobile County, Alabama, the ghost town of Beaver Mills hides among second-growth pines along Route Forty-Five. The site was home to a paper mill that served an unusual wartime purpose: during the Civil War, the facility was used as a uniform depot. A post office operated under the name Beaver Meadow from eighteen ninety to nineteen oh six.

When the mill finally closed, the workers left and the forest moved back in. Little remains of the mill today.
