Hueytown: Birthplace of the Alabama Gang
Near Birmingham, Alabama
This quiet suburb west of Birmingham became one of the most storied addresses in NASCAR history. In the late nineteen fifties, a young racer named Bobby Allison left Miami looking for more places to compete. He found central Alabama, started winning, then went back to Florida and talked his brother Donnie Allison and their friend Red Farmer into moving north.
The three set up a race shop in Hueytown, and they were soon joined by others. Journalists started calling them the Alabama Gang, and the name stuck. Bobby Allison alone won eighty-five Cup Series races in his career, ranking fourth all-time.
Four members of the Hueytown circle were eventually inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame: Bobby in twenty eleven, Davey Allison in twenty nineteen, Farmer in twenty twenty-one, and Donnie Allison in twenty twenty-four. Not bad for a small town off the interstate.
