Lipscomb: From Wheeling to Lipscomb Station

Near Birmingham, Alabama

The land where Lipscomb sits was first settled in eighteen thirty-two by Vincent Loveless, whose father had come to Jefferson County as one of its earliest pioneers. A Baptist church organized here in eighteen thirty-four. For a time the community was known as Wheeling, named after a coal operator from Wheeling, West Virginia named Stimson Harvey Woodward who ran blast furnaces nearby.

The name changed again in eighteen eighty-five when three brothers, S.W., Lawrence, and H.P. Lipscomb, arrived and Lawrence opened a general store. A rail line connecting the area to Bessemer and Birmingham came by eighteen ninety, and the stop was called Lipscomb Station. The station name outlasted everything else. Today Lipscomb is a small city nestled between Bessemer and Birmingham, still carrying the name of a storekeeper who arrived and decided to stay.
