Lone Cedar Church of Christ
Alabama
Lone Cedar Church of Christ has anchored the Green Hill community since eighteen ninety-eight. The first Christians here met in a log building that doubled as the neighborhood schoolhouse, a common arrangement on the rural frontier where one room served both faith and learning. A frame meeting house followed in the early nineteen hundreds.
The congregation took its name from a single cedar tree standing in plain view of the road, christened Lone Cedar by an early traveling gospel preacher. A sturdier stone building and later a larger auditorium followed. Part of the broad Restoration Movement that swept this corner of Alabama, the little church became a landmark and a steady center of life for the families of Green Hill.
