Walnut Street Historic District

Alabama

You are driving through the Walnut Street Historic District, one of the prettiest residential neighborhoods in Florence, Alabama. The oldest house here dates to eighteen seventy, but the street really filled in during the eighteen nineties, when prosperous Florence families built along these tree lined sidewalks. Look around and you will see the whole sweep of American taste packed into a few blocks.

There are ornate Victorian homes and Classical Revival mansions, modest cottages from the early nineteen hundreds with California bungalow touches, and two story brick houses from the nineteen twenties with Georgian influence. About twenty nine of these homes have been carefully restored. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen seventy six, with the boundaries expanded twice in the nineteen nineties.

It is a quiet walking tour of how a Tennessee River town dressed up its money over half a century.
