Alaska's Liberty Bell Reproduction

Alaska

That bell outside the Federal Building in Juneau is one of fifty-five. In nineteen fifty, to promote a savings bond drive, the United States Treasury commissioned a full size copy of the Liberty Bell for every state and several territories. Six American copper companies paid for them.

Each one was cast at a French foundry near Annecy, faithful right down to the famous crack and the Pass and Stow trademark. The American Bridge Company donated the supports, and Ford provided the trucks that carried the bells around the country during the bond drive. When the campaign ended, each bell stayed where it had toured.

Alaska's came to Juneau, the territorial capital, and has stood near the Federal Building ever since. It is a small piece of a coast to coast promotion most people have long forgotten.
