Kingman Depot

Near Chloride, Arizona

Kingman, Arizona owes its existence to the railroad. The town was named for Lewis Kingman, who surveyed the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad route through here in eighteen eighty-two. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe built its first depot; fire took it.

A second station followed; fire took that one too. The third and current depot, built in nineteen oh seven in Mission Revival style from poured concrete, proved fire-resistant enough to last. After decades of neglect and a long closure, Kingman won federal preservation funding in two thousand two.

The restored depot reopened in two thousand eleven, splitting its space between an Amtrak waiting room and a railroad museum. Route Sixty-Six runs right past the front door, which is how it always was: the rail corridor and the highway corridor are the same corridor here.
