Kingman
Near Chloride, Arizona
Kingman sits at the crossroads of two of the defining highways in American road mythology. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway arrived here in eighteen eighty-two, and the town that grew up around its depot became a service hub for the Mojave Desert. When Route Sixty-Six was designated in nineteen twenty-six, it followed the old National Old Trails Road through Kingman, making the city a stop on the Mother Road's run between Chicago and Los Angeles.
The stretch of Route Sixty-Six through Kingman and west toward Oatman is one of the longest surviving stretches of original alignment in existence. Actor Andy Devine, born in Flagstaff in nineteen oh five, grew up here, and the main street through downtown is named in his honor.
