Arnold United States Courthouse, Little Rock
Near Little Rock, Arkansas
The federal courthouse on Capitol Avenue in Little Rock was completed in nineteen thirty-two. Architects in the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury designed it in the Academic Greek Revival style, a restrained take on classical columns and cornices that the federal government favored during the Depression. The building also provided a jobs boost during hard times.
A matching east wing was added in nineteen forty-one. The structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen ninety-nine and renamed in two thousand three for Richard Sheppard Arnold, a celebrated Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals judge who served from Little Rock and was widely regarded as one of the finest federal jurists of his generation.
