Historic Arkansas Museum
Near Little Rock, Arkansas
In the late nineteen thirties, preservationist Louise Loughborough noticed that a half-block of old houses near Third and Cumberland in downtown Little Rock was about to be condemned. Among them was the Hinderliter House, the oldest surviving building in the city. Loughborough mounted a public campaign, framing Little Rock as a town of three capitols: the Hinderliter House, the Old State House, and the current State Capitol.
The Arkansas General Assembly listened. Act three eighty-eight of nineteen thirty-nine created the Arkansas Territorial Capitol Restoration Commission and named Loughborough chairwoman. The museum opened on July nineteenth, nineteen forty-one.
Today it preserves restored territorial-era buildings and operates as the Historic Arkansas Museum.
