Camden Confederate Monument
Arkansas
This marble figure on the Ouachita County Courthouse grounds in Camden is unusual. Erected in nineteen fifteen, it was raised not to honor soldiers but to honor the women who supported the Confederate cause during the Civil War. It shows a woman in a long dress, clutching a flagpole against her shoulder, standing before a granite obelisk.
The effort was led by a camp of the United Confederate Veterans, aided by a chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It is carved from Italian marble.
In a twenty twenty vote, county residents chose to keep this courthouse monument where it stands.
