El Dorado Confederate Monument

Arkansas

This monument on the Union County Courthouse lawn was raised in nineteen ten by the Henry G. Bunn chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, to honor local men who served in the Confederate army. Ten infantry companies were raised in Union County during the Civil War, with others scattered through cavalry and artillery units.

The unveiling, in March of nineteen ten, was a major civic spectacle. The bandstand was draped in red, white, and blue bunting and Confederate flags, seventy aging veterans sat beneath the speakers' stand, and some seven hundred schoolchildren filled the courthouse grounds.

Like many such monuments, it remains a point of debate. It still stands today at the corner of Main and Washington streets in downtown El Dorado.
