Higginson, Arkansas

Arkansas

Higginson, in White County, is another town the Cairo and Fulton Railroad drew into existence. Like many stops on the line, it is said to have been named for a man named Higginson connected with the railroad. A post office opened at the depot in the eighteen seventies, and the little town filled in around it: two hotels, two grocery stores, a drugstore, a cafe, and a veneering mill.

The Rock Island Railroad later linked Higginson between Searcy and Des Arc. The village incorporated in the early nineteen hundreds. Local accounts tell of a fire that swept through downtown and took much of the business district.

The town rebuilt on a smaller scale and has stayed that way.
