Pocahontas Depot and the Iron Mountain Line

Arkansas

Like so many Arkansas towns, Pocahontas owes much of its growth to the railroad. After the Civil War, the Saint Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad pushed new lines into this corner of northeast Arkansas, and the route was proposed to enter the state right here in Randolph County, bringing travelers and trade to what had been a quiet river town on the Black River.

In nineteen eleven the Frisco line built a new railroad bridge across the Black River.

The old depot near downtown has been restored and now serves as a museum of transportation, preserving the memory of the rails that made the town.
