The Dardanelle Confederate Monument
Arkansas
A young marble soldier stands watch near the Yell County Courthouse in Dardanelle, raised in nineteen twenty-one by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The women spent years raising roughly seventeen hundred sixty dollars, a serious sum then, to buy a statue honoring the county's Confederate soldiers. The monument has not always stood where it does now.
After a new bridge opened over the Arkansas River in nineteen thirty, the Daughters argued it should be moved so that everyone crossing into town would come face to face with the marble figure. It was relocated to the southeast corner of the courthouse grounds, where it has stood ever since. The monument joined the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen ninety-six as part of a statewide grouping of Civil War sculpture.
