Atascadero: The Utopian Colony That Became a City

Near Paso Robles, California

Atascadero was not just another California town. It was a deliberate utopia. Edward Gardner Lewis, a wealthy magazine publisher who had already built one planned community in Missouri, purchased the old Atascadero Ranch in nineteen thirteen and celebrated the acquisition with a ceremony on July fourth, nineteen thirteen.

He brought in experts in agriculture, engineering, and city planning to design a model colony intended for thirty thousand residents, featuring broad boulevards, civic buildings, and cooperative farming. Early settlers arrived to find a tent city on land that would eventually hold banks and government halls. Lewis's financial empire eventually collapsed, but the physical infrastructure he built survived him.

The grand Italianate administration building he constructed still anchors the city center. Atascadero incorporated as a city in nineteen seventy-nine, well after the utopian dream had faded, but the street grid and civic ambition Lewis laid down still shape the place today.
