Robert Mondavi's Mission: Making California Wine a Cultural Project
Near St. Helena, California
The building you are looking at was not designed to look like a California winery. It was designed to look like what a California winery should be, and the distinction is the key to understanding what Robert Mondavi actually accomplished.
When Mondavi founded this winery in nineteen sixty-six, after the family dispute that had forced him out of Charles Krug, he understood something that most of his contemporaries did not: Napa Valley did not need just better wine. It needed a story. It needed architecture, criticism, collaboration, regulation, and a theory of itself as a world-class wine region rather than a pleasant California peculiarity.
He traveled to France every year and brought back techniques. He introduced extended oak barrel aging to California cabernet, he popularized Fumé Blanc as a marketing reframe for a varietal that was not selling, and he engaged the French wine establishment not as a supplicant but as a peer. In nineteen seventy-nine, he partnered with the Rothschild family of Bordeaux to create Opus One, the first major California-French joint venture wine. The collaboration was a statement: California and France could make wine together as equals.
Around the same time, the infrastructure of serious wine culture was being built. Robert Parker founded the Wine Advocate in nineteen seventy-eight, creating the critical apparatus that could assign Napa wines the ratings they needed for international credibility. The Napa Valley Appellation was established in nineteen eighty-one, giving the valley's name legal protection against dilution. These were not accidents; they were the outcomes of sustained advocacy by Mondavi and others who understood that identity had to be constructed, not merely assumed.
The winery passed to Constellation Brands, a large corporate producer, in two thousand four. Robert Mondavi died in two thousand eight. The project he started, the deliberate construction of Napa Valley as a cultural and economic destination with a global reputation, outlasted the man and the company. It produced the valley you are driving through.
