DSV Turtle: The Submarine That Proved It Could Be Done

Connecticut

On display at the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut, the deep submergence vehicle Turtle was launched in nineteen sixty-eight and served the United States Navy for over two decades as a research and rescue submarine. Named in homage to David Bushnell's Revolutionary War egg-shaped submersible, the original Turtle of seventeen seventy-six, this Turtle was designed to dive to about sixty-five hundred feet and took part in Cold War undersea work. Retired in nineteen ninety-seven, it is now a relic of America's Cold War undersea reach.
