Center for Puppetry Arts
Georgia
The Center for Puppetry Arts opened in Atlanta on September twenty-third, nineteen seventy-eight, with a very special guest cutting the ribbon: Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog. The center was founded by Vincent Anthony, a puppeteer who made puppetry his life's work. He found a permanent home for the center inside a former elementary school on Spring Street in Midtown.
Today it is the largest nonprofit organization in North America dedicated entirely to the art of puppetry. The museum holds a vast collection of puppets from around the world, including a significant archive of Jim Henson's original Muppets. Henson himself maintained a close relationship with the center throughout his life.
It remains a working performance venue with a resident company staging productions for children and adults year-round.
