Garden City: Where Savannah's Industrial Port Was Born
Near Tybee Island, Georgia
Garden City was created in nineteen thirty-nine, not as a charming suburb, but as a workers' town built to house the workforce of new factories and chemical plants west of Savannah. Then in nineteen forty-eight, the Georgia Ports Authority purchased a four-hundred-seven-acre former Army depot right here and turned it into what would become one of the busiest container terminals in the Americas. Today Garden City Terminal handles more cargo tonnage than almost any other port on the East Coast.
Right next door in Savannah, Gulfstream Aerospace builds some of the world's fastest private jets. What started as a modest industrial housing project became the economic engine of coastal Georgia.
