The Teton Scenic Byway

Near Driggs, Idaho

The road you are traveling is part of the Teton Scenic Byway, a route locals proudly call the quiet side of the Tetons. Where Jackson Hole sees the range's dramatic eastern face and the summer crowds, this Idaho side offers the same peaks in profile with a fraction of the traffic. The byway runs for several dozen miles, climbing from Swan Valley over Pine Creek Pass, dropping into Victor, then heading north through Driggs and Tetonia before continuing toward Ashton.

Along the way it strings together the small farm towns of the valley, wide hay meadows, and long unobstructed views of the back of the Grand Teton and its neighbors. Because the range rises so sharply from the valley floor with almost no foothills on this side, the mountains seem to stand up like a wall from the potato fields. At its north end the byway connects with the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, opening a longer loop through eastern Idaho.

For travelers willing to take the long way around, this stretch delivers the classic Teton skyline without the bustle, a reminder that the same mountains can feel entirely different depending on which side you approach them from.
