New Baden, Illinois: The Tornado That Built a Town
Illinois
New Baden, Clinton County, was founded in eighteen fifty-five by German immigrants who named their new home after the Baden region back in Germany. For decades it remained a small agricultural village, its maple-lined streets sitting quietly along the railroad. Then a devastating tornado struck in eighteen ninety-six, leveling much of what the settlers had built.
What happened next is the real story: neighboring communities poured in aid, and residents rebuilt bigger and more substantially than before. The calamity coincided with the end of a long national depression, and New Baden emerged from the rubble as a larger, more modern town. Old Saint George Church and the New Baden Historical Society Museum still stand as witnesses to the German heritage that survived both the storm and a century of Illinois prairie life.
