Remington: Named at the Railroad's Request

Indiana

The Jasper County town of Remington started life in the early eighteen hundreds as Carpenter, named for a creek nearby. When the Logansport, Peoria, and Burlington Railway arrived in eighteen sixty, the new depot needed a proper name. The spot was platted by Jesse Fordice on July twenty-seventh, eighteen sixty, and renamed Remington in honor of William Remington, a local merchant who had backed the railroad's arrival.

The town grew as a farm-supply hub on the flat prairie between Chicago and Indianapolis, shipping grain east and receiving goods west. Today about thirteen hundred fifty people live there, and it still sits squarely on the old rail corridor that gave it its name.
