Dexfield Park Shootout

Iowa

On a July morning in nineteen thirty three, this quiet ground was a battlefield. Dexfield Park had once been an amusement park, set on the south bank of the Raccoon River. By the summer of nineteen thirty three it lay abandoned, and the Barrow gang, led by Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, hid out here to nurse wounds from an earlier gun battle.

A farmer noticed bloody bandages, alerted authorities, and on July twenty fourth a posse closed in. A furious firefight erupted. No one died on the spot, but every gang member was wounded or dying.

Clyde's brother Buck was mortally hurt, and his wife Blanche was captured. Bonnie and Clyde, both injured, escaped on foot, stole another car, and ran for ten more months before they were gunned down in Louisiana.
