Jefferson's Municipal Band Shell
Iowa
This band shell in Jefferson is a monument to small town grit. Built in the early nineteen fifties, it went up almost entirely on volunteer sweat and donated materials. Collectors gathered cash, and local businesses supplied sand, steel, and cement.
Much of it was salvaged. The county handed over steel beams from a dismantled bridge near Manning, and the city contributed brick pulled up from torn out street paving. One welder from the Franzwa blacksmith shop alone gave many hours of his labor.
In all, dozens of people pitched in to build the structure. For generations it has anchored the park as a stage for concerts, rallies, church gatherings, and community celebrations, a crown jewel raised by the people who use it.
