Jasper County Freedom Rock
Iowa
This patriotic boulder is one stop on the Iowa Freedom Rock Tour. The project traces back to nineteen ninety-nine, when a Greenfield teenager named Ray Sorensen, known as Bubba, was inspired by the film Saving Private Ryan to honor veterans his own way. He painted a twelve-foot rock with patriotic murals for Memorial Day and repainted it every year afterward.
In twenty thirteen he began a tour to place one Freedom Rock in each of Iowa's ninety-nine counties. Each design is unique, profiling local veterans and heroes shaped with input from a county committee. This one represents Jasper County. Sorensen finished the full set by twenty twenty-one and went on to paint more, in Iowa and beyond, turning a roadside hobby into a sweeping statewide memorial to those who served.
