Jefferson's Lincoln Statue
Iowa
This bronze figure of Abraham Lincoln in Jefferson holds a special distinction. It is often described as the first statue of Lincoln built beside, and dedicated to, the Lincoln Highway, the pioneering coast to coast auto route that ran right through town. It was erected in nineteen eighteen, a gift from a local couple, Mister and Missus E B Wilson.
A bronze plaque on the base carries words from Lincoln. The First World War delayed the planned granite base, so the statue stood on plain concrete at its dedication, and the proper granite was added years later.
