Queen of Peace at Trinity Heights
Iowa
On a hill on the north side of Sioux City rises a stainless steel statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of Peace, standing roughly thirty feet tall. It is the centerpiece of Trinity Heights, a campus built on the site of a former Catholic college and high school. The idea came from Father Harold Cooper, a local pastor who was inspired after seeing a giant statue of Mary in California and set out to bring something similar to the Midwest.
The Mary statue was raised on December sixteenth, nineteen ninety two, sculpted by the South Dakota artist Dale Lamphere. A companion statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, even taller, was added later. Today tens of thousands of visitors a year come to walk among its two dozen shrines and quiet garden corners.
