The George Curtis Mansion
Iowa
This grand Victorian home in Clinton was built in eighteen eighty three for George Martin Curtis, a lumber baron, and his wife Etta. Curtis had come to Clinton in eighteen sixty seven and built the Curtis Companies into a powerhouse of sash, door, and millwork manufacturing along the Mississippi. He later served two terms in Congress.
He designed the mansion as a living showroom for his trade. Tradition says each room features a different kind of wood, decorated with the flower of the tree that wood came from. The house holds more than forty stained glass windows, hand carved banisters, and massive fireplaces.
The Clinton Woman's Club bought the mansion in the early twentieth century and has cared for it ever since. It earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen seventy nine.
