General Leavenworth's Grave
Kansas
Here at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery lies the man the fort and the city are named for, General Henry Leavenworth. In eighteen twenty seven he established this post on the bluffs above the Missouri River, one of the oldest United States Army posts still in operation west of the Mississippi. Leavenworth was a veteran of the War of Eighteen Twelve and a career soldier on the frontier.
He died in eighteen thirty four out in Indian Territory, at the place called Cross Timbers, while leading an expedition against the Comanche and Pawnee. For decades he rested far away in New York. Then in nineteen oh two, his remains were brought home and reburied here in the fort that bears his name.
His grave there is marked today.
