Olpe
Kansas
The little town of Olpe got its start in eighteen seventy nine, when the railroad pushed through this part of Lyon County. It went through a couple of names first. It began as Eagle Creek Station, then was renamed Bitlertown after the man who owned the townsite, Gilbert Bitler.
The settlers, though, were mostly German immigrants, and many of them came from a town called Olpe in Germany. Their homesickness is how the town came to be called Olpe. The town was incorporated in nineteen oh five, and it remains a small farming community of a few hundred people, still carrying the name its homesick settlers chose.
