Teter Rock
Kansas
On a high, lonely point in the Flint Hills stands a tall slab of stone called Teter Rock. Back in the late eighteen hundreds, a settler named James Teter, who owned thousands of acres out here, piled up local rocks at this spot as a guidepost. The grass plains stretch so wide and featureless that pioneers could easily lose their way, and Teter's marker helped them find their way.
Later an oil boom came to this land. A town called Teterville grew up nearby in the nineteen twenties, and the original pile of rocks Teter left was lost. Teterville is a ghost town now. In nineteen fifty four the county historical society raised this stone slab to honor James Teter, and today it offers one of the great open vistas in all of Kansas.
