Last Recorded Indian Raid in Kentucky
Near Mammoth Cave, Kentucky
In October of seventeen ninety-two, ten warriors attacked a party of travelers at Oven Spring, just a short distance from here. Two men and a woman were killed, a girl and another woman were taken captive, and five pack horses were seized. Settlers under Captain William Edgar pursued the raiders for four days, caught them at Roberts Spring, killed the attackers, and freed the captives.
Kentucky had been a state for only a few months. The new nation's authority on the western frontier was thin, and the border between settler expansion and Native territory was violently contested. Raids like this one were part of a broader pattern of conflict that had raged since the first permanent settlements of the seventeen seventies. This engagement at Oven Spring is recorded as the last such raid in the area, marking a grim closing chapter in the long struggle for the Bluegrass frontier.
