Sardis: On the Mason-Robertson County Line

Kentucky

Sardis is a small community straddling the Mason and Robertson county line in northeastern Kentucky, one of the small settlements in this rolling hill country between the Licking River valley and the Ohio River. Robertson County, which shares the town, was not formed until eighteen sixty-seven , one of Kentucky's last counties, carved from portions of Bracken, Harrison, Mason, and Nicholas counties and named for state appellate court Chief Justice George Robertson.

Sardis itself has never been large , only sixty residents at the twenty twenty census, a rural service center for the surrounding farms. The town is typical of the small communities along Route Sixty-Two in this part of northeastern Kentucky, where the land has been in tobacco and cattle production for over two centuries. Robertson County remains Kentucky's smallest county, and Sardis sits near the edge of it.
