Richmond, Maine

Maine

Richmond, on the Kennebec River, has roots going back to seventeen twenty-five when Massachusetts colonists established a garrison here. What sets it apart is a later chapter: in the twentieth century, Slavic immigrants, including Poles, began arriving, and Richmond was once called the largest Slavic-speaking settlement in the United States. Richmond remains a small Kennebec County town, but its Polish heritage is a reminder that the immigrant story runs deep even in the quietest corners of rural Maine.
