Belair: The Stable That Won the Triple Crown Twice

Near Dc Northern Virginia, Maryland

The brick stable sitting on the grounds of the old Belair estate is the only place in the world that produced two Triple Crown champions, and the only pair that were father and son.

The Thoroughbred story at Belair goes back to the seventeen forties, when colonial governor Samuel Ogle imported English bloodstock to Maryland. By the twentieth century, under owner William Woodward, Belair Stud became one of the premier stables in the country. Gallant Fox won the Triple Crown in nineteen thirty. His son Omaha won it in nineteen thirty-five. No other sire-and-offspring pair has ever repeated that feat.

A third champion, Nashua, was named Horse of the Year in nineteen fifty-five. The nineteen oh seven stable now houses exhibits and a restored stablemaster's apartment, a museum to the era when this corner of Maryland was the center of American racing.
