DC Sniper Victims Memorial
Near Dc Northern Virginia, Maryland
For three weeks in October two thousand two, two gunmen terrorized the Washington metropolitan area in a series of random shootings that paralyzed daily life across Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo killed ten people and wounded three others, targeting strangers at gas stations, parking lots, and shopping centers. The victims listed on this memorial include James Martin of Silver Spring, Sonny Buchanan of Rockville, Prem Kumar Walekar of Olney, Sarah Ramos of Silver Spring, Lori Lewis Rivera of Silver Spring, Pascal Charlot of Washington, and Dean Meyers of Gaithersburg, among others.
Muhammad was executed in two thousand nine. Malvo received multiple life sentences. The attacks left a lasting imprint on how the region understood public safety, and the memorial placed here names those who were killed, preserving their identities against the tendency to remember the perpetrators more than the victims.
