Buckman Tavern

Massachusetts

Buckman Tavern has stood at the edge of Lexington Battle Green since about seventeen ten, serving as the gathering place where Captain John Parker's militia mustered before the April nineteenth fight. The men had been warned sometime after midnight by Revere and William Dawes, then waited hours in the cold April darkness, retreating to the tavern to warm themselves and wait for confirmation of the British column's approach. After the brief and fatal skirmish on the green, the wounded were carried back inside.

John Buckman had run the tavern since seventeen sixty-five, and the building stayed as an inn and social hub for decades after. The Lexington Historical Society has preserved it since nineteen oh five, one of the most authentic Revolutionary-era taverns in New England.
