Governor Alex Groesbeck: The Road Builder

Near Detroit, Michigan

A historical marker near Mound Road marks the birthplace of one of Michigan's most consequential governors. Alex Groesbeck was born in Warren Township in eighteen seventy-three, the son of a Dutch-French pioneer family. After graduating from the University of Michigan Law School, he rose through Republican politics to win the governorship in nineteen twenty.

He served three terms, and his legacy is still under your wheels. Groesbeck launched an aggressive statewide road-building program at the moment the automobile was transforming American life, overseeing the paving of thousands of miles of Michigan highways and reorganizing state government for efficiency. He also abolished the spoils system in state hiring.

Historians credit him as the architect of the modern Michigan administrative state. He died in nineteen fifty-three, but the roads he built outlasted him by generations.
