Minnesota Marine Art Museum

Minnesota

On the banks of the Mississippi in Winona, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum opened in two thousand six with a collection that surprises most visitors. Yes, it has river history, but it also holds works by Monet, Picasso, Winslow Homer, and Georgia O'Keeffe, all connected by the theme of water.

The museum was founded through the generosity of Bob Kierlin, co-founder of Winona's Fastenal Company, and his wife Mary Burrichter. Its permanent collection includes more than six hundred artworks, eight hundred Mississippi River photographs and maps made by Army Corps draftsman Henry Bosse in the eighteen eighties, a four-hundred-piece folk art collection, and a static display of the retired dredge William A. Thompson. Six riverside galleries sit on a seven-acre campus beside the river.
