McRaven House: Three Centuries, Three Styles

Mississippi

McRaven House on Harrison Street in Vicksburg is one of Mississippi's most architecturally layered homes, built in three separate eras across more than fifty years. Andrew Glass put up a two-room frontier dwelling here in seventeen ninety-seven; rumor held he also robbed travelers along the Natchez Trace. An eighteen thirty-six addition brought Empire styling.

A final wing added in eighteen forty-nine brought the structure into Greek Revival. The result is a single house wearing three different architectural costumes from three different eras. During the Siege of Vicksburg in eighteen sixty-three, McRaven served as a Confederate field hospital.

The property changed hands many times afterward and has accumulated a thick folklore of hauntings. Today it operates as a historic house museum and paranormal investigation site, one of the few Vicksburg structures that lets you walk through the entire arc of antebellum Mississippi in a single afternoon.
