Avondale, Missouri
Near Kansas City, Missouri
Avondale is a small Clay County city on the northern side of the Kansas City area, and whoever named it was thinking of England. The valley running through the settlement was said to resemble the valley of the River Avon back in Britain, so the founders combined Avon with the English word dale, meaning valley, to get Avondale. The Kansas City, Clay County and Saint Joseph interurban railway served the town from nineteen thirteen until nineteen thirty-three, running electric cars northeast toward Excelsior Springs.
The old Avondale Trestle, which carried the line over Rock Creek to Winnwood Lake, is still remembered locally. Today Avondale is a quiet residential city that has been absorbed into the northern edge of the Kansas City metropolitan area.
