Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery
Missouri
Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, which became a national cemetery in eighteen sixty-six, grew from the Civil War's staggering toll of dead in the Missouri theater. It sits adjacent to the old military post south of Saint Louis and has become one of the largest and most historically significant national cemeteries in the country. Veterans from every American conflict since the Civil War are buried here, representing well over a hundred and fifty thousand individuals.
The cemetery reflects the full arc of American military history, from frontier soldiers who served at the barracks in the eighteen twenties and thirties, through the Spanish-American War, two World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam. The rolling bluffs above the Mississippi River provide a setting of quiet grandeur for a burial ground that holds some of the deepest roots of the American military tradition west of the Alleghenies.
