Mound City: North Point Becomes a County Seat

Missouri

Holt County, Missouri was opened to white settlement by treaty with the Sac, Fox, and Iowa nations in eighteen thirty-six. By eighteen fifty-three, a merchant named Galen Crow had opened a store along Davis Creek and gradually drew enough business that the post office relocated to his property in eighteen fifty-five, under the name North Point.

Crow effectively founded what became Mound City. The town was platted as North Point on October thirty-first, eighteen fifty-six. It was renamed Mound City in eighteen seventy-one, after mounds near the original townsite, and incorporated in eighteen seventy-three.

Mound City is a small city of about one thousand residents near the Missouri River in Missouri's northwestern corner. The county seat of Holt County is Oregon.
