Northwest Missouri State University

Missouri

The campus you see spreading across the hills of Maryville has a deliberate elegance to it, and there is a reason for that. When the Missouri Legislature created it in nineteen oh five, the competition to host the new Fifth District Normal School drew several towns into a bidding war. Maryville won by offering to donate eighty-six acres and fifty-eight thousand dollars in cash on the site of a former Methodist seminary. That was a serious commitment for a small northwest Missouri town.

Normal schools were the backbone of American public education in the early twentieth century. They existed to train teachers, and Missouri had decided to create one for each of its five districts. The northwest corner of the state was agricultural, spread thin, and badly underserved in terms of professional teacher training. Northwest Missouri State was the answer.

The campus design was drawn from the plan used for Forest Park in Saint Louis during the nineteen oh four World's Fair, which explains why the grounds flow so organically from one space to another. The state later officially designated the campus as the Missouri State Arboretum, recognizing its careful planting and landscape design.

The school became a four-year college in nineteen nineteen, then went through successive name changes tracking the evolution of higher education in America: Teachers College, State College, and finally in nineteen seventy-two, University.

Today Northwest Missouri State enrolls nearly eight thousand students and is known particularly for its early adoption of an electronic campus system in the nineteen eighties, a technology experiment that made it a national model for wiring a university before most institutions understood what that meant. It is, in other words, an institution that has continually outrun the modest ambitions of its founding, which is not a bad way to measure a university that started as a teachers college in a small Missouri town.
