Wolf Point: Oldest Town on the Hi-Line

Montana

Wolf Point began in the eighteen sixties as a trading post where Wolf Creek meets the Missouri River, and local tradition ties its name to the wolfers who worked this country. The Great Northern Railway arrived in eighteen eighty-seven, and a boxcar depot followed. The town incorporated in nineteen fifteen and became Roosevelt County seat four years later.

It sits squarely on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, home to the Assiniboine and Sioux peoples. Every July since nineteen fifteen, Wolf Point has hosted the Wild Horse Stampede, Montana's oldest rodeo, where cowboys wrangle and ride unbroken horses.
