Pomona Hall
New Jersey
On the eastern fringe of Camden stands Pomona Hall, a Georgian mansion begun in seventeen twenty-six by Joseph and Mary Cooper, who pressed their initials and the construction year into the chimney brickwork. The house anchored a plantation of several hundred acres along the Delaware River and was expanded in seventeen eighty-eight, making it one of the oldest surviving residences in South Jersey. The Camden County Historical Society operates it as a museum today. Its survival through three centuries of Camden's dramatic rise and decline as an industrial city makes it an unusual window into the colonial era on the western bank of the Delaware.
