Mount Gulian
New York
Mount Gulian, a Dutch-American estate on the Hudson River at Beacon, has stood on this bluff since the seventeen thirties, when Gulian Verplanck built a house overlooking the river. By the Revolutionary War the property was substantial enough to serve as the headquarters of General Friedrich von Steuben during the final campaigns of seventeen eighty-two and eighty-three. It was also here, in May of seventeen eighty-three, that von Steuben and fellow officers founded the Society of the Cincinnati, the country's first hereditary patriotic organization, whose membership descended through eldest sons of Revolutionary officers.
The original house was destroyed by fire in nineteen thirty-one, and a reproduction was finished in nineteen seventy-five. Mount Gulian is now a historic site and museum operated by the nonprofit Mount Gulian Society.
