Admiral Edwin Anderson: Medal of Honor at Vera Cruz
Near Wilmington, North Carolina
Edwin Alexander Anderson was born about four miles east of this marker in eighteen sixty and rose to become one of the most decorated naval officers of his era. In April of nineteen fourteen, during the United States intervention at Vera Cruz, Mexico, Captain Anderson commanded the Second Seaman Regiment and led his men across open ground swept by rifle and machine-gun fire from Mexican defenders. His steadiness under fire earned him the Medal of Honor.
He was cited for extraordinary heroism and an indifference to danger that inspired his regiment. Anderson continued to rise, attaining the rank of Admiral and commanding the Asiatic Fleet from nineteen twenty-two to nineteen twenty-three. He retired in nineteen twenty-four and died in nineteen thirty-three.
